Learning board off? Master him. Are you in?

learn board off with kitesurfing

Since the beginning of last year, after years of freeriding, I have been training more specifically for kitesurfing tricks. Before that I kitesurfed and had fun and that's what it's all about, right? But now it was time for me to be more ambitious. Just like old times, train to master tricks. You probably remember my process for mastering 'down loops'. For example, I have recently mastered the 'kiteloop transition' and 'downloop landing'. Now the 'board off'. Are you in?

Kitesurf 'board off'

You know the 'mega run' has yet to come of it and that I'm still gathering courage. Recently it was the turn of the board off again and so it was last week's ball. Our view on it learn new tricks:

Sometimes practicing new kitesurfing tricks is nothing more or less than a splash that stands between doing and not doing.

Spot choice: flatter water and not too deep

I opted for something flatter as the water is not too deep. Flatter water is fine for a controlled release. Not too deep, about 1.30 meters for me, is nice because in a crash you can quickly stand and walk back to your board. It became Oostvoorne. Unfortunately the wind was too gusty. Afterwards I understood from the spot manager that I should have gone a bit more downwind because the wind is more stable there. But I decided to make a start by practicing the take-off and maybe I could land a few.

Kiteboard was looser on the feet

A frequently heard tip is that for a 'board off' your foot straps should not be adjusted too tight. Your feet should be able to get out easily.

'Board off' via the 'tail' or via the 'grab handle'

You can also go for a 'board off' where you grab the board on the side or via the 'grab handle' in the middle of the kiteboard. It would be more difficult from the side. I start with a board off via the grab handle. Then you can choose the standard 'grab handle' or a larger one. I have a bigger grab handle to start with.

Progress made but not landed

As a wooden boy I couldn't get the board off my feet even with a large 'grab handle'. I should do more yoga and less push-ups, I thought to myself. But it soon worked. I see on my videos that I have to go a lot higher and need more 'air time' because I don't get to the landing. So next time more 'overpowered' on the water with a more stable wind. And according to the experts, when landing, look at the foot strap in which your foot has to go back in. That gives focus. In addition, also land slightly in front of the wind, instead of directly edging on landing, so that the kiteboard does not jump directly from under you when landing.
