In prelude to the Paris Olympics 2024 where kitesurfing is on the program for the first time, we followed the Tokyo Olympics. This gave us an idea of what this is all about and what can be expected in 2024. In addition, we naturally have a warm heart for windsurfing, and in particular Team NL. Thus this Windsurfing Olympic blog that we will update regularly in the coming days. Last update: Sunday, August 1, 2021.

Program Olympic Windsurfing

The Tokyo 2020 Olympic windsurfing had a program with 12 races. It raced with the RS:X class from Sunday 25 July to Saturday 31 July. Up to and including Thursday, 12 matches have been run according to the schedule for which a point count applies. After that, a so-called medal race ('Medal Race') was held on Saturday.

Lillian de Geus update

Where windsurfer Lilian de Geus was previously sixth in the general classification of the RS:X class, she failed to steam through and grab a medal. On Sunday she finished first in race 3. Lilian de Geus was the best in the world three times, but unfortunately she did not achieve an Olympic medal. It was her last chance, because RS:X will be removed from the Games

Kiran Badloe updated

We enjoyed Kiran Badloe. The windsurfer only had to cross the finish line in the final medal race to claim the gold. No sooner said than done!

In the races leading up to the medal race, Kiran Badloe always achieved places in the top 10 and in races 3 and 4 even a first place. Kiran was unfortunately disqualified for the fifth race in the RS:X class. After all, the jury decided that because he would have given Camboni too little space at the top buoy. This dropped Kiran Badloe to third in the overall standings. After that, Kiran took the lead in the general classification.

RS:X replaced by iQfoil in 2024

Many current windsurfing championships, for example the Olympic class RS:X, are still with traditional windsurf boards. However, this type of windsurf board will be replaced by an Olympic surfboard for the 2024 Olympics: the wind foil. The Olympic class is called iQfoil. View more information about kitesurfing as an Olympic sport in 2024.
