World Oceans Day and kite surfing. You can do this as a Kitesurfer

World Oceans Day 2021 - Here's what you can do

June 8 is the day: World Oceans Day 2021! We celebrate that because every kitesurfer owes a lot to the oceans. You would say a clear statement because without oceans and our own North Sea, kitesurfing would be nothing. In this kitesurfing blog we discuss good habits for kitesurfers. This way we can also contribute. Where we are talking about kitesurfing, you can of course also practice kitefoiling, wingsurfing, wingfoiling, surfing and in fact any water sport.

World Oceans Day much needed

In 2003, the United Nations declared World Oceans Day to protect the oceans. It was already clear then that this was urgently needed because the oceans are threatened by plastic, CO2 pollution, chemical pollution and disruption of the peace due to, for example, radiation. Ode to World Ocean Day.

Kite surfers are close to nature

I certainly can't judge all kitesurf spots in the Netherlands, so I don't even dare to do that. What I dare to say is that on the kite spots wherever I go, I am quite proud of how we as kite surfers deal with stands and parking lots. For example, I hardly see any waste on and around the beaches. A big compliment as far as I'm concerned and that may also say something about the fact that kite surfers generally have awe for nature.

For example, I regularly see kite surfers chasing rubbish on the beach. Because that's what you do when the bag of your currant bun runs off. Super!

World Oceans Day 2021. How far do you want to go?

Well, how far do we want to go? Of course it is true that producing kitesurfing equipment is harmful to the environment. Even though there are kitesurf brands who are doing a great job of minimizing the impact. For instance duotone. Also the trip to the sea or that distant holiday destination is by no means climate neutral.

World Oceans Day 2021 for kite surfers

You can do this as a kite surfer

Maybe we want to go so far as to take responsibility for our own behavior and to have fun by kite surfing. We list some good habits for kite surfers. Because of course it is not only World Oceans Day on June 8, but every day and session is something to reflect on.

  • Stop using disposable plastic such as straws, plastic drinking bottles, cleaning cloths, disposable plastic, etc.
  • Do not leave any rubbish (plastic, etc.) on the beach. But also, take active waste and plastic with you if you see it.
  • Respect the designated kitesurfing areas with which you can also respect the protected areas for birds, for example.
  • Respect temporarily cordoned off areas. For example, because at a certain moment a rare bird is breeding.
  • Separate your waste at home. Much has been said and written about it, but just do it.
  • Choose sustainable food and in particular sustainable fish.
  • Consume less and reduce your CO2 emissions. Do not do everything that is damaging to nature, but be aware of your impact on the environment and honor and respect nature.
  • If you can carpool, do this.
  • Have your old kite, kiteboard, wetsuit, etc. recycled. In this way it may get a second life.
