Volvo Ocean Race around NL buoy

It may not be kiteboarding, but it is certainly a very nice water sport! The performance of these teams is very impressive. And, a sailboat that goes downwave 'surfs' also.

October 4 marked the start of the legendary Volvo Ocean Race 2008 / 2009. A sailing race of approximately 260 days, half of which was on the open sea. The number of kilometers covered is approximately 45.000.

In the 2008/2009 race, for the first time from South Africa we sailed not to Oceania but to Asia and then to South America. The boats then go to Cape Horn from where they return to the Atlantic Ocean and return to Europe via North America. The route is usually about 45.000 kilometers across the open sea.

Around the buoy for the Netherlands

As co-sponsor of the Delta Lloyd boat, the municipality of Rotterdam has forced the organization of the Volvo Ocean Race to force the fast 70-footers to return to the port city.

Last time, in 2006, that led to more than a quarter of a million spectators.

This time, the eight boats will not moor in Rotterdam and sail a harbor race, but will 'drop by' in June 2009 during the stage from Galway in Ireland to Gothenburg in Sweden to round a buoy.
