Work & kite surfing, how do I say 'no'

At this time of the year, just before the clock is set, we as avid kiteboarders can just be on the water for an hour in the evening. The water is still warm and the traffic jams are not that bad compared to the winter months.

Saying 'no' is a problem. The monks of the famous Westmalle beer were recently clear about this. Production could be increased, but they declined, arguing: "Making beer is not our life, but we make beer for a living."

In contrast, the business is busier than ever. In almost all sectors, staff shortages put extra pressure on current employees. In addition, companies often have a large order list and the budgets for 2009 must now be prepared. There are many other reasons why you are asked to work overtime or take the initiative to go the extra mile independently.

In the workplace, saying 'no' is a big problem for many employees. They can hardly do this in a good way. The trick is to say 'no', without coming across as someone who has nothing to do for colleagues or the company.

Type 1

Be clear and honest from the start. Saying 'yes' and doing 'no' is always the worst option. You come across as unreliable and this will not benefit your career.

Type 2

Try to avoid the word 'no'.

E.g. "Do you want to work overtime tonight?" "Unfortunately, I made other plans tonight."

Type 3

Think about solutions.

E.g. "I can't this week, but if I shift my agenda, I can next Tuesday."

E.g. "Can you finish this job today?" "Unfortunately, it is already around five o'clock, but tomorrow morning I will immediately continue with it to finish it."

  1. Am I lucky that I still have quite a few days left, and have to use up the surplus days from the boss. The only problem is that I never know exactly when and can only indicate this 2 days in advance. Of course I want to be sure that the days off can be used 100%. Fortunately, the whole year went well, and with autumn just around the corner, it will also work out, despite the busyness at work.
