Cabrinha Crossbow 4 IDS Part I.

Cabrinha was the first brand to market a type of bow kite. This concept has now proven itself. By means of a different design of the kite (flatter) and bridles, bow type kites have a larger wind range and the possibility of a lot of depower. This is user-friendly and safe. The Crossbow 4 again contains a number of new gadgets. We cover the IDS.

IDS (Intelligent Depower System)

The kite can be depowered in two options or steps.

The first is, as you are used to, by pushing the bar away from you. There is no more stopper on the bar. It may be available later this year.

The second is the possibility to independently lower the kite in an extreme situation ('absolute depower'). You activate the quick release system for this. After this you can also restart independently.

This has been achieved by simplifying the bridles and having the front and back bridles function separately. By a simple transmission of pulleys in the front bridge, you get the effect of a 5th line, while retaining the simplicity of 4 lines. This keeps the bar very clean and easy to use.

It is also important to know that the bar has no pulleys has more. As a result, the heavier bar pressure has been reduced to a pleasant bar pressure and direct steering behavior. The effect of “Less is more” is achieved, which benefits performance, ease of use and safety.

It works like this: You let go of the bar (depower, 1st step), the power lines remain tight. The control lines say 80cm towards the kite, no further because the depower line is about that long. This causes the kite to tip over and depow (depower on demand, or the first step). If you had a depower line of 3 or 4 m, and you then let go of the bar, the kite would tilt far enough to get the 5th line effect. In other words: there is no special line at all with the kite, no special line is drawn to get absolute depower. Because it is the IDS line that runs through your bar that actually makes you pull 3 or 4m of your power lines. -Rory

The Cabrinha website contains more information and video fragments in which the operation is once again made clear.

In part 2 we will discuss the performance of the Crossbow 4 itself.
