Naish Thorn 130 × 39 up-close

The Thorn 2009

The 2009 products are all slowly arriving. Last time we saw Naish's 2009 bar and now we take a closer look at the 2009 board Thorn FC 130 x 39.

The Thorn 2009 is available in 2 versions, the normal and the FC. The FC stands for Full Carbon. Both Thorn boards have a core of wood. The construction of the foot straps that Naish Grav-D mentions have been put back to the old construction method of 2007. I had the 2007 model and these foot straps were great. I liked the 2008 but personally less than the 2007. The pads have been improved and have a thick edge where you can put your toes behind. Furthermore, the board has a high-gloss finish and you can see the carbon coming back on the top and bottom. Next time we'll go out on the water!

The normal Thorn 2009 is available in the sizes:

  • 128 x 38
  • 130 x 39
  • 132 x 40
  • 134 x 41
  • 136 x 42

The FC Thorn 2009 is available in the sizes:

  • 130 x 39
  • 132 x 40
  • 134 x 41

  1. Hi ArjanH,

I sail the 130 like the photos. Pop is really bizarre. More than the 2007. Now the board is stiff so you have to like that otherwise you can always go for the non carbon.

You are right that the boards are sailed bigger internationally. We are on relatively small boards here in the Netherlands. I sail the 80 with my 130 kilos and think this is big. I don't think you can make a wrong choice with the 130 or 132. It really makes little difference if you put the baords on top of each other.
    suc6.

  2. Sounds like music to your ears! I now sail the 128 2007 Thorn and I am very satisfied with the pop that I can get out of it! If I understand correctly, this board is very similar.

Only I still have some doubts about the sizes. All boards are getting bigger these days. What would you advise me? 130 or 132? My weight is between 75 and 80 kilos and I am about 1.90 tall.

    Thanks for the responses!

  3. Nice report Fer. I have experienced the same. Board goes really fast and is also really hard (Read stiff) I already sail a bit more in the duck position. But wide not ultrawide. There is a lot more to that board than the 2008 version. (More performance oriented.) It looks a bit like the 2007 but without spray in your face. 😉

  4. Update.

Today I sailed the animal and here my findings compared to the 2008 Thorn 129.
The FC is a lot stiffer than the 2008 which was nice flexion. The 2009 is also flatter in terms of scoop / rocker which makes the board very fast. Where the 2008 was focused on comfort, the 2009 is completely focused on performance. That is, more speed, more pop, less forgiving. The stance is striking. The middle position corresponds to the extreme wide stance of the 2008. So you can ride extra wide stance if you have very long stilts or have hardcore freestyle in your reportoire. I have the middle dangers and that means that you constantly have to keep more pressure on the back leg, especially in chop. That is a bit more tiring but makes the carved shorter and more radical, pop better and the landings more stable. At the end of the session the acidification had started quite a bit, but it could also be that I had not sailed for 3 weeks
The straps are new quite on the stiff and stiff side and will really have to be used. In the beginning it was not a meter and very uncomfortable. But after a few hours of sailing and having the straps completely tailored, I was reassured. Adjusting the straps exactly to size makes a world of difference in terms of comfort. Only after a few hours and correct adjustment of the straps I was used to the stance and the board. Too bad the cramps in my thigh muscles so then it was game over.
My opinion about the board is that the 2009 rides less comfy than the 2008 but you get that in return: speed, big pop and many adjustment options in terms of pads
The next session I'm going to try the narrow stance and turn the pads a position to duckstance.

Tip: check the screws of the pads after the first sessions. These will become slightly loose and will have to be tightened again. Once the screws have settled on the underlying plate, they will remain in place and will not loosen.

  5. Very nice toys again.

A question about the adjustability of the straps ……
With the 2007 model I didn't get the straps small enough for bare feet so what about the new Grav 3D pads and straps?
