How do I stay warm in winter while kite surfing?

Kitesurfing in winter. How do you keep it warm?

On many internet forums there are discussions about staying warm in winter after this somewhat cold weekend. However, a warm suit alone is not enough.

I personally think an accessory can also bring you a lot of warmth. Many brands have a good line of products for under your wetsuit or dry suit. Think of shorty's of 1mm, gloves, titanium lycras, caps, etc. These products can make the difference between suffering from a cold or having a warm session.

I myself wear a titanium lycra (heatseeker) under my suit, with a warm suit of 6/5/4 mm over it and of course shoes, gloves and a cap. A lot of heat is lost through the head, regardless of your warm suit or not. I also have good experiences with dry gloves. (Gloves) I personally find them much warmer than the normal neoprene gloves. Yet it appears that everyone has to do with personal preference. We are not all the same. Some people just get cold faster.

Let your shop provide you with good information and discuss on the internet or on the beach. In short, you exchange experiences and have a warm windy winter.

  1. I stopped diving and cut the shoes off my (diving) drysuit and attached ankle seals. The surf is really nice and you stay warm in it, but if the water splashes against my feet with force, water will get in. It always stayed dry when diving, I even took my cigarettes with me. You do have a lot of freedom of movement. And you also float nicely with it.

  2. Absolutely!
With that cold, a lot of energy is quickly rushed through, so especially in winter, good and energy-rich food should be consumed before the session.

  3. Yep… .but a lot of freedom of movement ……………… .and dry.
It is as if you are kiting with your snowboard outfit.

  4. A good (breathable) drysuit is quite on the pricey side, but this year I'm also going for a drysuit.
I have always sailed in neo in the winter, and that is doable as long as you are actively on the water, but everyone knows the moment of changing behind the car ..... nice to squeeze out of a wet suit with the wind on your wet naked body at sub 5 ° C. Get out of your suit nice and dry with a dry suit. You can also determine the heat yourself by varying the number of layers under your suit. It is also warmer if you just stay dry under your suit.
On the Slufterhuftersforum is a complete topic about the NPX Lucifer drysuit that is specifically designed for the kiter.

  5. Hi Iris, we will soon receive an article about wetsuits and the technology behind wetsuits. It's not about dry suits. Above (Image) is a suit which is made of neoprene and has a dry zip. You stay dry in this, but not as dry as a dry suit. See what works best for you. (Also in terms of functionality) A dry suit is quite specific and not everyone can agree with it. Be well informed.
