Kitesurf photography. Interview with Ton Wever

Photographing kite surfers - Interview Ton de Wever

Ea beautiful picture of yourself in action and taken at the right time is worth its weight in gold. Precisely because kitesurf photography is not easy. Our eye fell on a number of beautiful kitesurfing photos by Ton Wever. Photos that he has taken over the years and wanted to bring to the attention.

One element struck us. Ton's photos aren't just beautiful kitesurfing photos. Many photos are with a nod to nature and weather conditions at that time. This makes the photos extra special. This is how we made contact with Ton and we share his passion with you. No technical story about lenses and so on, but pure enjoyment.

Let's introduce Ton ... Who is the man behind those cool photos?
“My name is Ton Wever, 60 years old, born and raised in Alkmaar. I am a hobby photographer and I prefer nature, in the broadest sense of the word. I spend a lot of time on the road for my work, so I come across many beautiful locations that I sometimes visit later to take pictures. My best pictures can be found on tonwever.myportfolio.com. "

How did your passion for kitesurfing photography originate?
“For the past 10 years, I have spent 2 weeks during the summer holidays in a mobile home on the beach of Egmond aan Zee, near Bad Noord. Close to the activity beach, which has been relocated to Egmond Zuid a few years ago. But in the time that the activity beach was still at our doorstep, I often enjoyed all the kite surfers who came there. I took quite a few nice pictures of it. This is how my passion for kitesurf photography originated. ”

Do you also kitesurf yourself?
"No, I don't kitesurf, but I am quite familiar with it by now."

"

How did you come into contact with kite surfing?
“My children, a daughter and a son, had small kites when they were little, when they got bigger the kites also got bigger, at the end a mattress of 2 meters. So for them the logical next step was to learn to kite, they saw no different at Egmond than kiters who made the most beautiful jumps, they wanted that too. Unfortunately that never happened then, we could not afford the costs for the lessons for 2 children. ”

Have your children started kite surfing in the meantime?
“My daughter Tessa, now 24 years old, is a real world traveler and has experienced adventures everywhere and nowhere, wave surfing, sandboarding, bungee jumping… That kind of thing. And now she has also started kite surfing, just here in the Netherlands, Bergen aan Zee to be precise. Last week she and her boyfriend had a lesson, and yesterday she and her boyfriend went to see how things were going without an instructor. She asked me if I wanted to take some pictures of it and so I did. Unfortunately it didn't go so well that I was able to make very 'spectacular' kitesurf photography, but every start is difficult. ”

How did you get involved in sharing the photos online?
“Because I was there a bit earlier than she and it was busy with kite surfers, I took pictures of the kite surfers in the meantime, there were enough of them, the weather was good.
I got talking to one of those kite surfers and he asked me to post some photos on the Facebook group NL Kitesurfers. I did and was noticed. One thing led to another and thus this interview. Quite an honor to be honest. ”

Ton, thank you very much for the interview and the cool kitesurf photos. Have fun and good luck with your next kitesurf photography shoots. We will continue to follow you! Hopefully you will of course continue to photograph and share beautiful photos with us!

  1. Hi Ton,
    Fun and captivating story!!
I always enjoy the photos that Ton Wever takes and not just the photos here of kite surfers.
    Follow him on Instagram anyway.....
A photographer with a passion for the “perfect picture”

  2. Certainly José, as long as that hobby does not get out of hand. 😉 A good lens is not cheap in my opinion. I keep looking at that picture with the rider and the setting sun. Magnificent!

    1. I sold that photo you are talking about a few years ago to an avid kite surfer. He had the photo placed in a glass bathroom door in her house
