Maasvlakte 2.0 starts September

The container market is dying for it, we kiteboarders are hesitant about the coming period! On September 1, dredgers from Boskalis and Van Oord will start constructing the new port. This was announced yesterday by the President of the Port of Rotterdam Authority, Hans Smit.

Data about Maasvlakte XNUMX at a glance

  • It is a multi-billion dollar project that has been negotiated for 15 years.
  • 2.000 hectares (1 hectare is 10.000 m2) of port and industrial area will emerge from the sea.
  • The expansion of the current port capacity is 20%.
  • Milieudefensie and Stichting Faunabescherming Nederland have appealed against two of the five permits issued.
  • Dunes, beaches and a seabed protection area that will be lost with the construction must be compensated.
  • The new seawall of dunes and beaches around the new port area will be about twice as long as the current seawall.
  • Part of the long seawall is a recreational beach with space for, among other things the kitesurfer.
  • The Port Authority expects the first container ship to dock in 2013.
  • Depending on the (economic) development, the entire area must be in use by 2015.

Kiteboarding from September 1

It will be an exciting time for us kiteboarders. A number of questions immediately come to mind. Can we continue kiteboarding on the slufter in the coming period? Will the beach and parking spaces still be accessible? Is it healthy to kiteboard in water that is dredged nearby?

All kinds of questions we would like to answer. In the coming period KiteboardPro, with the help of you, will answer this as well as possible. We will follow the progress and keep you informed!

Tips

  • Do not sail in the safety zone of the dredgers!
  • Take care of good seamanship!
  • Inform fellow kiters, here and on the various kite surfing websites, about special experiences with regard to flow et cetera.

  1. VOORNE - Algemeen Dagblad

    October 22, 2008

The slufter beach on the Maasvlakte, which is popular among kite surfers
    will remain open next year.
The surfers feared losing their spot because of the recently launched
construction of the Second Maasvlakte. Councilors in the municipality of Westvoorne
warned of a flood on the beaches of Voorne and closure of
the Slufterstrand. According to a spokesperson for the Rotterdam Port Authority
that fear is unfounded. The first sand from the new land is being reclaimed
north of the nudist beach, so that the kiters can do their thing for the time being
and do not have to divert to Oostvoorne.

  2. Today we spoke to the project team in response to our proposal and the request to study the possibilities to what extent our spot remains accessible during the construction of Maasvlakte2. This request and proposal have been discussed with the contract manager. While studying the planning, it was promised that the Slufter will remain accessible in 2009 at least. In October I have a meeting with the project team to see what options there are after 2009, so the impact is less disastrous than we thought.
I am hopeful that we can continue sailing around the construction!
