Flat water and always strong winds make Lüderitz (Namibia) the perfect spot for speed contests. From September 15 to October 13 there will be a battle with the aim of setting a new speed record for kitesurfing. New world records have already been set early in the event. This is very promising!

Rob Douglas (US) just failed to break the magical 50 knot limit. Still his was 49,84 knots (92,3 km / h !!) enough for a new world record. This makes Rob Douglas the first kiteboarder to break the world windsurfing speed record. This record was held by Antoine Albeau (49,09 knots).

Women also managed to set a new world record. Sjoukje Bredenkamp (SA) achieved a speed of 45,20 knots! She used a custom board and a Naish Helix as a kite.

“I didn't expect to break the record so early in the event. My goal was to break the 45 knot barrier, but it is really great that it worked out so quickly. It gives a good idea of what is not possible. ” Says Sjoukje Bredenkamp.

New South Africa (and Africa record):
Hennie Bredenkamp 47,59 knots

New Namibian record:
Jurgen Geiger 44,90

New UK Kite Record

  1. Those guys go fast… Pffffff have also sailed with a GPS receiver myself. 65 km is still feasible, but above that every additional km is quite a goal.
