DIt is still narrow-minded that we as kite surfers are happy with the new Bataviastrand in Lelystad. A group of water sports enthusiasts have even given Bataviastrand its own page on facebook 'Hoekipa Dijk'. Named after the true Hookipa Beach, but in our own Lelystad as Hoekipa beach.
'Hoekipa Dijk' - Watersportstrand Lelystad
You are probably wondering where this name comes from. We found out via facebook. Wind surfing has been going on at this location for decades. All that time it was a hard to reach sandy beach of a few meters between the rocks; see there the comparison with Hookipa in Hawaii. Since 2014, this group of water spotters has been lobbying for a safe water sports location in the municipality of Lelystad. They have set up a foundation for this; Hoekipa Dijk foundation. Ultimately, the municipality's naming committee decided to name the Bataviastrand. Bottom line: the dream, design, lobby is the work of years of commitment by a few local water spotters.
No more messing around to get to the Markermeer
There is no longer any need to fiddle with basalt blocks to get to the Markermeer. The new parking facilities are also significant progress.
First reaction of the Dutch Kitesurf Association (NKV) and kite surfer
Omroep Flevoland has followed the development of the water sports beach closely. The broadcaster also recently published a short report. In it one short interview with kite surfer Gerrit Renooij and regional coordinator of the Dutch Kitesurf Association (NKV) Leo VanLoon.
The Bataviastrand is intended as a true water sports beach, so not only intended for kite surfers but also for other water sports enthusiasts. Now we have a Hoekipa Dijk webcam and we can also enjoy all the activities from a distance. 😉
