Kitesurfing in the Bay of Roses

The Bay of Roses, also called Bay of Roses and Gulf of Roses, in northern Spain is a wonderful holiday destination for many. You see families, but also many (young) elderly people. The bay is very extensive so there is a beautiful destination for everyone. The same goes for water sports enthusiasts. Whether you like the kitesurfer, kitefoiling, windsurfing, wingsurfing, wingfoiling or likes surfing; it's all possible. In this blog you can read more about kitesurfing in the Bay of Roses. This also provides good information for wing foiling in the Bay of Roses. Are you planning a kitesurfing holiday in Spain or already at your destination, then read on.

Wind in the summer months

May, June, July, August and September are summer months with a good chance of wind on the coast of northern Spain. Then there is a good chance of a thermal wind. The wind then starts up to about 13 knots in the morning. Ideal for water sports-oriented families, but also great for cooling off. You can then go to the beach as well as water sports. After all, the wind is not too strong yet. In the afternoon there is a chance of 16 knots and more and then you can enjoy kiting in Spain, for example. This way it regularly blows through when the wind picks up. Then the well-known Tramontana wind, which often blows in the colder winter months, can pick up. 25 to 30 knots is no exception.

Also watch: how much wind do you need to kitesurf?

Wind direction and good spots

The wind direction usually varies between northeast and south. The further north you are in the Bay of Roses, the gusty the wind off the coast is with a northeasterly wind. So pay particular attention to Roses itself and Empuriabrava. For wing foiling, windsurfing and kite foiling this is not such an issue, but with kite surfing it is annoying when the kite falls from the sky when the wind drops for a while. There is also a chance of drifting in the northeasterly wind. After all, the wind is along the coast, too sideshore. Kitesurfing further south in the Bay of Roses generally produces more stable winds with northeasterly winds. From an easterly wind it is side onshore and the wind is much more stable.

Wing foiling Bay of Roses

Windsurfing and wing foiling can be done almost anywhere. You can easily get on and because it is not immediately deep you can easily get behind the bathers. This way no dangerous situations arise.

Also watch: wing foiling quickly becoming more popular than kitesurfing and windsurfing?

Kitesurfing Bay of Roses

Kitesurfing and kite foiling requires space to enter the water. The spots from Empuriabrava and further down in the busy summer months are the best kite spots for this. From there it is generally quieter in terms of bathers. So there is enough space and you will not be a burden to anyone. Moreover, it is sandy almost everywhere and not immediately deep. Examples of spots where more kitesurfers go are Empuriabrava, Riuet, Sant Marti d'Empuries and Sant Pere Pescador. At Sant Marti d' Empuries is a ION water sports center which is all about kitesurfing, windsurfing and wing foiling. At Sant Pere Pescador Kitesurfing School Sant Pere Pescador en Kite Experience.

Conclusion kitesurfing in the Bay of Roses

Kitesurfing, kite foiling, windsurfing and wing foiling in the Bay of Roses is top notch. You can already see it in the photos. If you get the chance to go into the water in the Bay of Roses in your shorts or shorty, then this is recommended in my opinion. If you are less experienced, go to a wind direction and spot that is suitable for it and where guidance may be offered. Take a look if necessary what size kite you take. Most famous spots are Empuriabrava, Riuet and Sant Marti d'Empuries. For wing foiling and windsurfing it is of course easier to enter the water for the well-known seaside resorts. The wind can vary considerably on the day itself and is difficult to predict. So be ready when you get there.

  1. Been there for 2 weeks last June and have been kitesurfing for 11 days, very good conditions and with 3 men on the water. Mainly used my 7m. Although the wind was exceptionally good for that. Normally they use an 11 or 12 🙂

    1. Great! Last week there was also kiting here every day. Well with the larger sizes of kites and kite foilers with the 7 or 9 meters. Wingfoilers with wings from 5 to 6 meters.
